Such robots also require the students to code with advance coding concepts to execute specific task to enable them to understand certain STEM concepts. They will also get to construct robots with intricate connections consisting of mechanisms such belt & pulley system and/ or gear trains that are similar to the real-life application. This program consists of 30 lessons of 1hour 45min each to introduce Scratch coding blocks and its function for WeDo robotics to the students. Important arithmetic concepts like decimal numbers, inequality symbols, etc, would also be illustrated to the students to apply in their coding for the robots to execute the required tasks in the given challenges. This program consists of 20 lessons of 1hour 45min each, enables the students to learn & apply the commonly used coding concepts, parameters and conditional statements, assimilated with the use of the sensors, to the real-world word-based coding in robotics. Hence, the students are suitable to continue to this program that emphasizes the Scratch coding platform in robotics. Students who have completed the Tougher Robots program, they would have established a good foundation in advanced robot building and coding for WeDo robotics. These robots mirror many real-world applications such as building an all-wheel drive system of a car, utilising clever coding to vary the motor speed with a sensor, synchronizing the speed of all moving vehicles, etc, hence providing a good insight to the mechanism used in our daily life to the students. We have witnessed students who were weak in visual-spatial abilities and fine motor skills during the earlier stages of the WeDo program, making tremendous improvement and becoming more confident when they are in this phase of the WeDo program.Īs the tougher robots require more connecting steps to complete, they offer many discovery moments for the students who build and code it. In addition, some simple math concepts will be taught or reinforced in the coding parameter that will sharpen the students’ estimation skills.Īdditionally, honing the students’ dexterity and cognitive functions are of importance. These 30 robots (40 robots for the 5 years old Foundation program) will illustrate to the students advanced robot building and coding concepts through application. The WeDo Tougher Robots program consists of thirty lessons (forty lessons for the 5 years old) of 1 hour 45 minutes each in the weekly class, and it is three sessions of 3-hour each in our June/ December school holiday program. We will provide feedback after each lesson and a recommendation to continue to the Intermediate program after completing the two Basic lessons, to the parents. The student’s ability to remain focused is the fundamental requirement so that they can benefit from the program. The coding segment requires the students to have the ability to remain focused as the concepts are verbally elaborated and illustrated. While the robot building segment emphasizes on the fine motor and visual spatial skills of the students, it also requires them to pay attention to details to connect the parts correctly. The program introduces the students to the lesson sequence and our delivery method to achieve the lesson’s objectives. The WeDo Basic robotics program consists of two lessons of 1 hour 30 minutes each in the weekly class, and it is a one session of 3-hour in our school holiday program. In it, they will also learn and apply advanced coding concepts to enable the robots to execute more complex task(s) according to the sensors’ input when they progress along. The Foundation program prepares the young students to construct robots with more connecting steps and intricate connections in the Tougher Robots program. understanding & applying the coding concepts to attempt the given challenges. understanding the coding blocks & its function,ģ. Nevertheless, the lessons will develop and strengthen the fine motor skill and cognitive skill that are important to this age group.Įach lesson consists of three segments encompassingĢ. Another segment of the lessons emphasizes on the basic applications of the 2 sensors with their respective coding functions to enable the robot to execute specific tasks. The students will be introduced to robotics concepts with the emphasis on robot building (hardware), basic coding (software) and the interface between them to create purposeful outcomes. The lessons require the students to remain focused so that they can understand & apply the concepts during lessons to benefit from it. The program consists of 10 lessons of 1 hour and 30 minutes each. We have designed our WeDo robotics Foundation program specially for 5-year-olds.
